MAMA LUCY

Mama Lucy Kamptoni is the founder and headmistress of Shepherds Junior School. In addition to her role as the school's leader, she uses the income from her own small poultry business and boutique to supplement the minimal tuition she collects to ensure the school's continued expansion and success. Her spirit, determination and skill has enabled the school to grow over the last five years from one classroom with fewer than ten students, to a school that now serves more than 200 children at seven grade levels.

Epic Change founder and CEO Stacey Monk had the opportunity to volunteer at Shepherds Junior in January 2007 and worked closely with Mama Lucy during that time. She wrote about Mama Lucy in her travel blog, and had this to say about her:

“She [Mama Lucy] is an incredibly savvy business woman who runs her school with grace, charisma and humility. She's proud, but never arrogant . . . I cannot personally believe all that she has built - single-handedly - simply to make the lives of these children better. She is totally generous, has utter faith that whatever resources she needs will be delivered, and never expresses a single doubt about the school's future. I'm actually certain, too, that . . . her attitude and skill alone will ensure Shepherds Junior's continued expansion and success.”
